Although you probably know and because it was all over the US news and internet, Comedian George Carlin died (or “passed away” if you’d prefer) Sunday night a week ago at aged 71 from heart failure. George had taken the the number two spot on the Comedy Central list of 100 greatest comedians of all time in 2004 but he was at the top in my list. Regrettably I never got a chance to see him perform live due to his infrequent tours overseas.
Having a career that spanned over 40 years he will probably be best known for his stances on free speech, notably the “7 words you can’t say on television” (which lead to a supreme court case in 1978), religion and the church. However what I enjoyed most was him talking about language and the things we all say and hear that really make no sense at all. Here is a clip of George talking about airline announcements from his 1992 tour/album Jammin’ in New York.
Following his death, Time magazine published an article on How George Carlin Changed Comedy. Other comedians Jerry Seinfield and Kevin Smith also wrote articles about George and how he influenced their lives and careers. The Colbert Report paid tribute in their own unique way making him the word.
